The Paolo Banchero family runs through one Seattle campus. His mother left the University of Washington as its all-time leading scorer in women’s basketball. His father played football there. An uncle did too.
Then the Orlando Magic star chose Duke instead. Later he chose the United States over Italy, and the reason hung on his bedroom wall.
This guide sticks to what credible outlets have reported, and flags where the record is incomplete.

Who is Paolo Banchero?
Paolo Banchero is an American basketball player, born November 12, 2002, in Seattle. He played one season at Duke before the Orlando Magic drafted him first overall in 2022. He was the 2022-23 Rookie of the Year and a 2024 All-Star. In July 2025 he signed a five-year, $239 million extension, ESPN reported.
Who are Paolo Banchero’s parents?
Paolo Banchero’s parents are Rhonda Smith-Banchero and Mario Banchero. They met as students at the University of Washington, where she starred in basketball and he played football, CBS Sports reported.
Rhonda Smith-Banchero, the mother
Rhonda Smith-Banchero grew up in Seattle’s Mount Baker neighbourhood, the same area where she raised Paolo. At Franklin High School she was named state player of the year.
At Washington from 1991 to 1995, she left as the school’s all-time leading scorer. She made three All-Pac-10 teams and entered the Husky Hall of Fame in 2004. She also played for a USA Basketball team in the 1990s.
Her pro career covered three leagues. She played for the Seattle Reign in the ABL, then overseas in Taiwan and Israel. The Sacramento Monarchs drafted her in the third round of the 2000 WNBA draft.
She later coached girls’ basketball at Holy Names Academy in Seattle. She also taught her son the game, a role Andscape explored in a 2022 feature.
Mario Banchero, the father
Mario Banchero played football for Washington, joining as a walk-on. His brother also played for the Huskies.
He is a businessman. Wikipedia, citing a 2024 Seattle Times story, says he co-owns the family’s long-running butcher and meat distribution business.
When colleges chased his son, Mario refused to pressure him. He told CBS Sports in 2019 that each person should handle their own path, and that online fans worried him more than family did.
What is Paolo Banchero’s family background?
Paolo Banchero’s family background is African American on his mother’s side and Italian on his father’s. That paternal line earned him Italian citizenship in February 2020, the Seattle Times reported.
The Banchero name has deep Seattle roots. A 1991 Seattle Times obituary describes Eddie Banchero, a coal miner’s son raised in Black Diamond, who founded E & E Meats in Seattle in 1931.
That obituary doesn’t name Mario. So while the family meat business and the Black Diamond roots fit together, the exact link between them isn’t confirmed in the sources checked here.
Does Paolo Banchero have siblings?
Paolo Banchero has two younger siblings, Giulio and Mia, and both play college sports. Giulio played football at O’Dea High School, Paolo’s school, and signed to play at Eastern Washington starting in 2026.
Mia plays soccer. She is listed on the Queens University of Charlotte roster.
Childhood and early life
Paolo Banchero grew up in South Seattle playing several sports. He played basketball at the Rotary Boys and Girls Club and also played football and ran track.
At O’Dea High School he was briefly the backup quarterback on a state championship football team. In basketball he was named Washington’s Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior.
Then came the choice everyone in Seattle watched. Most expected him to follow his parents to Washington. In August 2020 he committed to Duke.
How did family shape Paolo Banchero’s career?
Paolo Banchero’s family shaped his career with a coach at home and a hands-off approach to big decisions. His mother taught him the game. His parents let him pick Duke over their own school without a fight.
Family decided his international choice too. Italian citizenship made him eligible for Italy, and he was named to an Italian qualifying squad in 2020. In June 2023 he chose the United States instead, which angered Italy’s federation president, Sports Illustrated reported.
The reason was a photo. Banchero told Spectrum News 13 that a picture of his mother’s 1990s USA Basketball team hung in the basement where he slept. He saw it every day, and he called it the biggest factor in his decision.
In 2025-26 he averaged 22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists. Orlando lost a seven-game playoff series to Detroit, and he scored 38 in Game 7.
He isn’t the only recent top pick raised by an athlete parent. See Cooper Flagg’s family, Victor Wembanyama’s family background and Dyson Daniels’s family.
